Drummond, the Board of directors generally does not involve itself in TC matters except in the exceptional case of member appeals (which, I'm glad to say, have been practically non-existent throughout the years); OASIS TC Administration has the full confidence of the Board. That being said, it should be clear that I do not speak for the Board which, like all Boards, has a mind of itself. I would recommend that if the TC wants to solicit Board input, the best way would be to address the Board formally through oasis-board-comment@lists.oasis-open.org

David, if that were the entire case, don't you think Sun -- given their extra visibility in this particular situation -- would have taken particular pains to explain that in their comment on their vote?

I know that due to a limitation in the software OASIS is currently using, Sun's comment on their vote isn't visible to the public, but OASIS has confirmed that all comments should be public. Here's what it says:

"Sun currently does not support XRI; we are in agreement with W3C's TAG opinion to be found at http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-tag/2008May/0078.html".

Contrast that with the comment from Ray Denenberg of the Library of Congress that I quoted in my post.

You'd think that members of the OASIS board of directors would be the most sensitive and constructive about finding ways to reconcile differences between one of their own Technical Committees and the W3C.

But again, that's behind us now. I agree with you that further discussion is the most responsible action, and I look forward to working with the OASIS board to identify the most constructive way to have this dialog with the W3C TAG.

Eduardo, I understand the separation. The irony I was referring to is the fact that it's hard to for others looking in from the outside to see that separation.

That said, let's put it behind us. The XRI TC would like to solicit the input of the OASIS board of directors as to how to address the issues that the W3C TAG raised. I'm very interested in your ideas about how to best do that.

Not that I have any insight into whether a concerted campaign occurred, your question "why don’t they just let it die a natural death in the marketplace?" is easily answered.

Conflicting, overlapping standards are confusing to the marketplace, have a long effective lifetime, and damage the reputation of the publishing standards organisation.

Given that it's not "ironic" that the Sun rep voted no - it's entirely consistent with their duty to OASIS and good standards. Given the rejection by the TAG - probably the most respected group of experts on web architecture - voting no, and asking for further discussion is almost the only responsible action.

Drummond, nothing ironic about it. As Sun's voting representative to OASIS, I vote according to Sun's internal consensus at any given time, and not according to my personal opinion. As an OASIS Director, whether chair of the Board or not, I act representing what I consider OASIS's best interests, without interference from Sun and without consultation on my part, as anybody who has seen me in that context can attest. Two different roles, two different attitudes, no irony.
